Orange

Oranges are perhaps the most well-known citrus fruit consumed in Spain. Although the Valencia Region is the biggest exporter abroad, there are large orange groves both in the Basque Country and Tarragona.

Originating in China, it was the Arabs who brought them to the Iberian Peninsula in the 10th century. Today there are different varieties, with different calendars: Navelina (October to January), Navel (January to March), Lane Late (January to May), and more.

  • It could be said that the best way to consume an orange is to eat it whole (whether for dessert or in a salad), but it can also be part of the main course (as in duck à l'orange) or it can be used to make cookies, juices, infusions, cakes, and so on.
