Green Commerce
Green Commerce is a programme aimed at promoting the supply of local, organic foodstuffs sold directly by the producers among the stallholders at Barcelona's municipal markets. For this reason, the project is organised jointly by the Barcelona Municipal Market Institute and the Barcelona Federation of Municipal Markets. Together with these organisations, criteria have been established to identify stalls and products offering an agreed percentage of local or market produce/ organic produce/ produce directly sourced from the producer or farmer. Green Commerce aims to facilitate access to sustainable food for all residents, and at the same time add value to the municipal markets, as well as working with market traders so that they themselves become ambassadors for sustainable food products.
This initiative started as a pilot project at six municipal markets in 2021 (Concepció, Llibertat, Sarrià, Ninot, Sants and Horta) and has now been extended to all the city’s food markets. So far, 619 of the 1,105 establishments eligible to take part have signed up. The highest numbers of Green Commerce establishments and Green Commerce Corners are to be found at the markets of Sarrià, Bon Pastor, Les Corts, Sant Andreu, Sants and Horta. By sector, those with the most participating establishments correspond to butchers, fishmongers and fruit and veg stalls.
Work will continue to add more establishments in the coming months and to prompt improvements among businesses in terms of the volume of these products they offer, with incentives, moves to help supply mechanisms, training, communication campaigns and efforts to ensure a proper verification and control system.
