With 26 editions under its belt, the Alimentos de España awards have become a key event for highlighting the most innovative initiatives and those most committed to the food chain. At this year’s edition, one of the award winners was the brand Es im-perfect, created by the Fundació Espigoladors in 2016, which received an award for its initiative to cut food waste.

The jury was impressed with its work to reduce and raise awareness of food loss and waste by producing conserves from fruits and vegetables which, despite their good quality, are discarded within the commercial circuit.

They also highlighted its social initiatives to create job opportunities for people in vulnerable situations and to champion an agri-food system that protects local farmers and producers, avoiding pricing policies that are harmful to them.

A successful model with an environmental and social impact

The members of Fundació Espigoladors explained that 2023 was a key moment for the project: “We decided to scale up our model and exponentially increase our environmental and social impact”.

This was achieved by increasing production, diversifying channels and launching new product ranges that help to combat food loss and waste. They invested in new, more technological machinery and carried out their own R+D+I to generate differential value in their products. What is more, it is one of the first organisations to have a food loss and waste plan.

Now, with this award, not only has all the work they have done over recent months been recognised, it also opens the door to a future full of possibilities. “This recognition is an honour that spurs us on to continue working to transform the agri-food system and ensure a more just and sustainable future”.
